Protection of pets and children

Avoid conducting Aversive Conditioning under circumstances that could reduce the safety of people or coyotes.
  • Leash dogs and monitor for coyote approaches while patrolling. Pick up small dogs if coyotes are observed.
  • Leave dogs at home when responding to reports of coyotes.
  • Avoid involving children under 12 in aversive conditioning and do not leave them unattended while conducting aversive conditioning on coyotes.

Be aware that a study led by Young et al. (2019) has found that dogs reduce the efficacy of Aversive Conditioning. You should therefore consider leaving your dogs at home if possible.
