THIS PROGRAM IS NOW FINISHED.
Coyotes will almost always run away from approaching humans, but take these precautions to protect yourself from coyotes that may approach you.
You are the ultimate judge: if you feel unsafe, walk away.
- Work in pairs whenever possible. If you work alone, tell someone your intended route and return time. Carry an ID with an emergency contact.
- Carry a protective device, such as an umbrella, a hockey stick, or a hiking pole and a noise maker, or a can of coins (see video below).
- Make sure you have weighted tennis balls with you. Weighted tennis balls will be provided to up to 12 volunteers per neighbourhood. You can also find instructions for making weighted tennis balls under "Resources".
- Remain in cell communication with other volunteers.
- If coyotes seem very aggressive, such as by attempts to bite people or pets, cease treatment, withdraw without running away, and report the incident immediately to 311.
